Kanchipuram silk sarees and the GI tag

Kanchipuram silk sarees, often spelled Kancheepuram silk or called Kanjeevaram, are among the most widely known textiles of South India. The national tourism board presents the town as a centre of Kanjeevaram weaving next to its role as a religious centre. The cloth carries a geographical indication, which means that the name is legally tied to a place and a way of making it.

The register entry for Kancheepuram Silk lists the applicant as the Department of Handlooms and Textiles of Tamil Nadu and the registry entry is dated 2004/2005. The district administration describes the weaving as cooperative work. Figures for looms or weavers change over time, so this guide does not quote any. For the temples that usually share a day with the weaving visit, see the temples overview.

Our picks: silk and weaving visits

The Vellore combination centres on live weaving demonstrations at a weaving centre, while the temple day includes a silk weaving visit with a private guide. The temple-and-silk day with a family weaving house is the more hands-on option.

How to recognise real Kanchipuram silk

The two labels people mention most are the GI tag and the Silk Mark, and they answer different questions. The GI protection is about origin: a saree sold as Kancheepuram Silk should come from the region and be made in the protected way. The Silk Mark scheme is about the fibre. According to its FAQ it marks pure silk with a hologram, a unique serial number and a QR code. A Silk Mark label alone does not tell you that a saree was woven in Kanchipuram. Ask the seller which label applies, look at the tag itself and keep the receipt.

Some points are easy to check with your own eyes and hands. Look at the border and the body, where the pattern should be woven into the cloth rather than printed on it. Check the reverse side for floating threads that show how the motif was made. Compare more than one piece in good daylight, because shop lighting changes the colour.

A price example, not a price range

A cooperative's online shop shows sarees in this category at, for example, 18,068.40 INR instead of 22,585.50 INR, and 46,460.40 INR instead of 58,075.50 INR. These are shop examples taken on 31 October 2026, not a price band for genuine sarees, and they say nothing about availability or how long a discount lasts.

Where visitors shop

The national tourism board names Gandhi Road and Mettupalayam Street as the silk shopping areas of Kanchipuram. Walking them gives you a sense of the range, from plain borders to heavily woven pieces. This guide does not recommend a shop and does not rate any. Take your time, compare at least three offers and do not feel obliged to buy at your first stop.

Many visitors plan the saree visit for the middle of the day, which fits the temple break. Most temples close from about 12:00 to 16:00, so the hours between are a good time for browsing and lunch. The day trip page shows how a tour fits both in one day.

Weaving visits on guided tours

A weaving visit is best understood as a tour stop. Some of the private day trips listed above include a visit to a silk weaving centre, and one of them lists live demonstrations of traditional techniques. Another offer is built around temple architecture and silk weaving. The operator picks and arranges the centre.

This is not the same as turning up at any workshop in town. A shop or cooperative sales room is not automatically a place where you can watch weavers, and no purchase is needed to join a tour. Do not expect a free guided visit by default, and ask your guide what is planned. If you are travelling on your own and want to see weaving, ask your hotel or a guide for an arrangement made in advance.

For the background of the textile and the town, the history page covers the periods in which Kanchipuram grew into a temple and weaving centre.

Frequently asked questions

What does the GI tag on Kanchipuram silk mean?

It ties the name Kancheepuram Silk to its place of origin and method of making. The registry entry is dated 2004/2005.

Is the Silk Mark proof of origin?

No. The Silk Mark scheme labels pure silk. It does not show that a saree was woven in Kanchipuram, so ask which other label or document the seller can show.

Can I watch weavers at work?

On several guided tours a weaving centre is part of the programme, and one offer mentions live demonstrations. For visits on your own, arrange it in advance, since a shop is not automatically a workshop.

How much does a Kanchipuram silk saree cost?

Prices vary widely. A cooperative shop showed examples of 18,068.40 INR and 46,460.40 INR on 31 October 2026, but these are shop examples and not a price band for all genuine sarees.
