Mahabalipuram as an excursion from Kanchipuram
Mahabalipuram, also written Mamallapuram, lies on the Tamil Nadu coast and is known for its Pallava rock architecture. The Archaeological Survey of India lists the Group of Monuments as a World Heritage site since 1984. The Shore Temple and the monolithic Rathas belong to that group. This page is not a city guide. It explains Mahabalipuram as a trip that complements the temples of Kanchipuram, which have a different character: inland, active places of worship rather than a coastal monument group.
A route portal gives about 70 km and roughly 1.5 hours between Kanchipuram and Mahabalipuram. The portal itself notes that this is based on an assumed average speed and not a guaranteed driving time, so allow extra time. Combining both places means a long day, which is why the day trip page lists several private tours that do it from Chennai.

Our picks: Mahabalipuram visits
Both private day trips combine Mahabalipuram with Kanchipuram, one with a private guide and entrances per itinerary. If you only want the Shore Temple, the three-hour guided walk is the shorter choice.

Shore Temple, Rathas and rock carvings
The Shore Temple stands close to the sea and is the monument most people picture when they hear the name. The Five Rathas are shrines carved from single pieces of rock. Further monuments include the large carved rock face known as Arjuna's Penance and the huge balanced boulder called Krishna's Butter Ball. Tour programmes that cover both towns usually list these stops in their itineraries.
All of this belongs to the Pallava period, the same dynasty that made Kanchipuram a capital in its early centuries. If you want to understand the link, the history page sets out the periods, and the Kailasanathar Temple in Kanchipuram is a good point of comparison, being a Pallava sandstone building in the inland town.
A shorter option is a guided walk of about 3 hours in Mahabalipuram alone. It is a walking tour at the Shore Temple, with a professional guide and entrance charges listed as included, and your guide meets you at the entrance of the Shore Temple. It does not include Kanchipuram. It suits visitors who base themselves on the coast and want an informed walk without a long drive.
ASI tickets, opening and rules
Ticket rates for the Group of Monuments are published by the Archaeological Survey of India, and the rate table of a parliamentary answer dates from December 2022. It lists 35 INR for a digital payment or 40 INR in cash for Indian, SAARC and BIMSTEC visitors, and 550 INR digital or 600 INR in cash for other foreign visitors. A local portal repeated the same amounts in October 2026. Treat this as the rate level of 2022 and check the current price at the ticket counter or on the ASI site before you go, because ticketing rules for ASI monuments may change.
Opening hours depend on the source. One guide gives 06:00 to 18:00, with the ticket counter closing a little earlier, while a local portal says sunrise to sunset. Plan a daytime visit, confirm the hours on site and do not count on evening access.
For behaviour at the monuments, a visitor guide describes these points: do not climb on the monument walls, do not bring food into the protected area, personal photographs are allowed, and drones and commercial filming need a permit. Bring a hat, water and sun protection, as the open ground gives little shade.
How to combine Mahabalipuram with Kanchipuram
The order of a combined day is usually Chennai, Kanchipuram, Mahabalipuram and back. Because temples in Kanchipuram close at midday, the drive to the coast often falls in the early afternoon, and you reach the Shore Temple for the softer light of late afternoon. A private tour makes this simple, and entrance fees may be part of the programme, so read the inclusions first.
Travelling on your own, you can break the trip in two. Spend one day in Kanchipuram, see the temples and sleep in town or in Chennai, then go to Mahabalipuram another day. The where to stay page compares the three bases, and the getting there page covers the roads out of Chennai. A report from August 2026 announced funds for tourism development in Mahabalipuram. Before you go, ask about any building works at the monuments.
